At this point, it’s impossible to deny that Amazon is a logistics behemoth on par with UPS and FedEx. Though the retailer is often discussed in competition with Walmart, Target, and every other e-commerce company on earth, when it comes to its physical footprint, it looks more like a package carrier.

Amazon does more inventory storage and order packing than either UPS or FedEx, but all three have sortation centers, trucks, vans, planes, and local delivery facilities. They also have logistics, transportation, and technology talent to run it all.

In the coming years, the three companies may look even more similar as FedEx and UPS try to catch up to Amazon when it comes to tech. Both of the more traditional carriers have vowed that they are on a path to make use of decades of data.

FedEx executives said last month that technology and data analytics will be the key to maintaining the profitability the company found during the pandemic, beyond 2021. UPS is building a team of tech heavy-hitters to do the same.

The median annual salary at Amazon is $29,007 per year, according to the company’s annual proxy statement. At UPS, that figure is $44,254. At FedEx, the most recent median salary, released in 2020, was $49,059. But managers, analysts, and engineers often make far more.

UPS Vice President of Engineering Bala Ganesh told Insider the company doesn’t feel a struggle to find the right talent at the moment.

“From my perspective, I’ve got a pretty good pipeline,” Ganesh said, adding that UPS has relationships with Georgia Tech and MIT. “It’s all about showing those interesting projects … The more we talk about it, the more we publish things we’re doing, we see more and more interest from these kids who want to come and be part of it,” he said.

But as e-commerce delivery becomes ever more closely tied to tech, the competition for talent could heat up.

Insider analyzed the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification’s 2020 disclosure data for permanent and temporary foreign workers to see how much Amazon, FedEx, and UPS paid their logistics employees. US companies report how much base compensation workers are offered when filing paperwork for H-1B visas on behalf of current or prospective foreign workers. Here are the numbers.
